WHO WE ARE: NJSports.com (aka New Jersey Sports Heroes) was created as a research exercise in 2010. Its goal was to elevate the unique culture and history of New Jersey sports through the stories of its 100 most influential athletes. More than a decade later, the list of athletes profiled on the site has grown to over 1,000—with more bios and sports stories added every month.

WHO MAKES THE CUT?

The vast majority of athletes we profile were either born or raised in the Garden State—or both. In some cases, such as Hobey Baker and Pop Lloyd, their influence on New Jersey’s sports culture came a bit later in life – but their impact simply cannot be ignored. Many of the athletes profiled in these pages were born in New Jersey and then moved away. Although they made headlines elsewhere, they wore their New Jersey roots proudly. The athletes you will not find in these pages are the ones whose only connection to New Jersey is that they suited up for collegiate or professional teams here—or lived in New Jersey while playing for pro teams in New York. Their exploits are covered in Great Moments and It Happened in Jersey sections you’ll find under each sport.
